The history of the city started in 1625, when Dutch colonists came. In 1626 Peter Minuit bought the island of Manhattan from the Indians for 60 guilders. In 1628 Fort Amsterdam was built and 270 people lived there. The name of this small village became New Amsterdam. In 1664 the English conquered New Amsterdam and they changed the name in New York. From 1784 till 1794 the city was capital of the state New York. Later Albany became the capital of the state. From 1785 till 1790 the city of New York also was the capital of the United States of America. The first president, George Washington, started his job in Federal Hall in Wall Street New York. The city grew very fast. In 1896 the Greater New York Area was organised.

A famous park in New York is Central Park. This park is long, and lies in Manhattan. It is made by P.L. Olmsted. Central Park is a beautiful park. In the middle there is a lake. There are a zoo and a skating rink. In Central Park lived 100 years ago sheep. Now it is a green place between skyscrapers. Other parks in New York City: Bronx Park, with the New York botanical garden and zoo. The greatest parks: Pelham Bay Park and Van Cortland Park. There are beaches everywhere, but not in Manhattan. There are everywhere places where you can play baseball and football. There are in New York many stadions. In the National Tennis Centre are the US open tennischampionships

The WTC Story: New York It’s 09-11-2001, half past 8 AM. It’s sunny. It will become a beautiful day. New York wakes up. People are going to their work. In the Twin Towers in Manhattan are many people. ALARM! A plane flies to one of the WTC-towers! HELP! The plane flies in the WTC tower! FIRE! SMOKE! An emergency! The fire brigade comes! Is this an accident? WAAH! There is a second plane! That flies in the other tower of the Twin Towers!! This can’t be an accident! This is an attack! The towers are on fire. People run away! They scream! Then the tower collapses! Great clouds of smoke fly's trough the streets in Manhattan! People run faster away! They don't want to come in the cloud! Oh, this is a catastrophe!! This can't become more terrible!!! Can it? Now collapses the second tower!! Kilometres further you can see the clouds. This catastrophe will come in the history-books on the school. People are going dead, WHY? They haven’t something done! They are harmless!!!!
